JAMILETH BELLLIDOIt can be assumed that hunger and malnutrition will not be occurring in the united states in today's 20th century but many people don't know the truth behind that statement is false. In fact according to the Society of St. Andrew states in there website “More than 40 million people in the United States live below the poverty line and are at risk of hunger.” This means that these men, women and children struggle to have enough food in their plates to have a full nutrient meal. The majority of these 40 million people are children. Based on what i read more than 1 in every 5 children are at the edge of being at risk of hunger.
Solving hunger in America starts by being informed, then change in food service levels and lastly providing financial assistance or volunteering to be part of the ministry. After reading Household Food (In)Security Data for 2014 the text states “in the U.S. we throw away about 263 million pounds of food a day… every single day! And much of what is wasted actually is just surplus food.” This calls for action, meaning we as Americans must learn about the issues that are happening in our country. There are over 100’s website that can be used to inform one another about world hunger and used to spread the word. For example: feedingamerica.org, hungeris.org, endhunger.org, foodbankofscm.com and many other websites is a perfect way to start of your research and learn many simple ways to fight hunger in America. In addition to informing yourself about the issue, you can take on upon an action like not wasting food in your households or anywhere we go because as we know there are children, men and women in other parts of the world who are unfortunate and don't have access to even a minimum amount of food as we do. In fact we have unlimited amount access to surplus food that is perfectly edible. This is one part of solving hunger in America is reducing the amount of waste being thrown out each and every day. Lastly your service and time is a big contribute to helping end hunger. The Feeding America organization has 4 great ideas on stopping hunger in America. ESMERALDA IBARRAEveryone is aware of the crisis that has been going in the United States with homes being destroyed with weather disasters and also with water supplies that have been contaminated. The crisis in Flint has left the children to be the front line to the consequences that have been caused because of the water supply. “8,657 children have been exposed to lead poisoning” from drinking the water since the first report of contamination. The flint crisis plays a role in child hunger because there are kids who are not able to drink clean water, people in Flint, Michigan are running out of options. Children are getting their finger pricked to see if their system has a normal level of lead. There was a case where a mother lost her baby, he wasn’t even a year a old and she claims he had died because of lead poisoning caused by the water in Flint.
Child hunger is often seen as an insignificant issue, mostly because humans take the majority of their possessions into granted, including the biological required organic material for essential living and proper benefits: food. Needless to say, it is a significant issue that affects the environment, the economy, and morally. The issue of hunger has long existed. However, it is more of a problematic issue nowadays because humans continue to, at a subconscious level, reproduce. Taking into account that there are seven billion individuals today, it is rather difficult to keep up with the supply that all individuals demand. Child hunger rates vary from continent to continent, but some continents have the highest rate of hunger, that being South America, Africa, and Asia. Quite interestingly, Africa and its countries were rich in gold; until their rivals, the United States and others, imperialism and took the gold and other beneficial resources. Now most of the countries in Africa, rely on their instinct to survive on basic levels of food and water, or not at all. However, it is not only to blame humans for the cause of hunger and their inability to produce abundant food. 1.5 million children across western African countries are near starvation because of a drought. The number is quite surprising, considering that 30 percent sub-saharan African individuals experienced hunger in 2010. Child hunger in the United States is surprisingly a significant issue, but in terms of malnutrition. Although this may be true, it was not necessarily true during the Great Depression. The economical downfall that lead banks to file bankruptcy further lead to families to experience an excess of poverty because of the lack of finance. Overall, multiple children and adults died because of the inability to purchase food and thus causing hunger. Child hunger is an important issue because there children are the new generation from a global and national scale. Needless to say, there is hope; by pausing wars, “providing more political rights, and improving the rights of genders” will reduce child hunger. |
