WORLD HUNGER

Jamileth's Philosophy
Growing up in the Little Village community I have seen many injustices done to the people of my community. Starting off with my own household, with my parents working 40 hours a week to pay bills, a mortgage, keeping food in the fridge and barely being able to make it or save any money living paycheck to paycheck for many years. Years and years passed until my parents were able to have something to pass on to their children when they were gone. I soon became to realise that we weren't the only family to go through the same or even worser conditions. Many people in the neighborhood spend their years working at a job where many injustices were happening and no one was able to speak up because of fear. In class I also believe today's youth has became so comfortable in discriminating each other at school that it now because normal for students to do it all throughout the day, every single day. Therefore standing up for what you deserve, for what is fair and for what you deserve is the right thing to do for your family and your community regardless of where you come from you should be treated as an equal human being and that is what Social Justice means to me. I also believe that the definition of social justice at Social Justice High School has changed over the years. I believe that the incoming students are not as reunited as a class as the past years. For example teachers that have been in this campus since its opening speak about how the upperclassmen set an example for the younger students about respect and unity and I believe that should change and our 7 essentials should be more implemented in our curriculum.
Some struggles that we face with trying to achieve social justice is for the most part fear. I believe fear is a powerful feeling that can take over you and change your perspective about a lot of things and can even prevent you from achieving what you want. For example some historical obstacles that the minority group has gone through when trying to achieve social justice is the civil rights movement. There is unlimited amount of examples of obstacles that have happened in the civil rights movement. Starting off when Rosa Parks was jailed, a black community boycott of the city’s buses began. The boycott lasted more than a year, demonstrating the unity and determination of black residents. Another historical example has also been severe government repression, the assassinations of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, and the intense infighting within the black militant community caused a decline in protest activity after the 1960s. Some current obstacles that are happening in today's time is the Black Lives Movement. Many activists feel it is wrong to turn around and ask for money when yet another unarmed black person dies at the hands of state violence or from a white supremacist. Other obstacles the minority group have on achieving justice for themselves is black people are poorer and more likely to be targeted by police and to be arrested, and have higher chances of attending poor schools. All of these social indicators place the black community at greater risk for being a victim or a subject of violent crime. In one's everyday life it can be hard to achieve justice for yourself or for a group of people when no one believes that justice or being treated equally is a humanly giving right. This makes it harder for people to understand where you are coming from. In class it can also be hard to make the lower classmen to understand the importance and value of respecting one each other. For example some students can tend to be disruptive in class and can affect the learning of another student and the obstacle can be that that student might not really care for that student's education because he doesn't care about his own and when that happens it makes it hard to achieve justice.
Some strategies and techniques that can be practiced on a daily basis to achieve justice in your life would be acting in solidarity, talking with activist and be more conscientious of the language we use. Social Justice will advance all throughout my lifetime because i believe that one should never stop helping the people around them. I will continue to take this values in every decision i make. For example if i see that there is an opportunity for me to help or contribute to an injustice act I will feel the need to take action and help my people regardless if they are my skin color or my race we are all human and I believe humanity will be more loving and understanding if we all come together to help the unfortunate. I also have big hopes for the #BlackLivesMatter movement. I strongly believe and have faith this struggle that the black community will overcome this discrimination and their voices will be heard and change will be made in drastic measures. I strongly believe this because they have taken big actions towards stopping this issue and I believe there hard work will pay off and justice will be made for each and every victim that have lost their lives for unjustifiable reasons and their families will receive the answers they ask for.
My personal contribution to social justice might not be as big as other people have done but i believe that contribution from everybody little by little can lead a long way. I always tend help students understand a subject or an assignment when I know it takes them awhile to learn the material. I like to help my classmen do better in their classes as well. I also like to speak up for students when they are being judged and they are being oppressed and they do not speak up for themselves. The fire that triggers inside me is poverty and world hunger. I believe humans should not have to struggle for survival because they are dying from starvation and malnutrition. My future career will be in medicine and health care and I will study to be a sonographic technician. I believe that this career will reflect my commitment towards social justice because i would love to continue to help people in my community. I will help young moms have access to having check ups on their babies and be well informed about how they can be healthy and prepared for their newborns. I will be committed to helping other communities reach that goal as well and to feel comfortable to ask questions that they might have about their babies because some young moms might not know what's the first thing to becoming healthy while their babies are in the womb.
